Third-Time Guest Speaker Wally Shaw will speak to the club in a Zoom presentation titled Both Sides Now: Proactive, and Reactive Swarm Prevention Everyone Should Know. You'll hear observations on swarm-trigger criteria,  time tested approaches to swarm prevention, and recipes for success. The swarm-organizer bees in the hive want to facilitate reproduction; the beekeeper's agenda is to prevent swarming out into the neighborhood.

This event is focused on information for beginners. Rob Mathews will go over what to look for in a hive inspection, and how to do a sugar roll test for varroa mites. You'll have a chance to get hands-on experience with bees.

April In-Person Meeting

Join us for our monthly in-person meeting! Our speaker will be “Petaluma Bee Lady” Christine Kurtz.

Her topic will be Reading the Monitoring Board. What can various hive debris, frass and trash tell you about honeybees? Oodles — and you will be amazed!  With the use of screened bottom boards in conjunction with the observation boards, interesting and helpful correlations can be made to what is going on in the hive. We will discuss how to “read” the monitoring board and how to interpret the clues the various debris give us. The skill of reading monitoring boards can be helpful during times we cannot go into our hives due to the season or weather and a quick check can be done without disrupting the bees. Join us on this journey to learn about hive debris, frass and trash — you will never look at it the same way.

Zoom Presentation: Dr. Frank Rinkevich

Dr. Rinkevich is a Research Entomologist at the USDA Agricultural Research Service in Baton Rouge. He'll give a talk on Sustainable Miticide Use and Varroa Control. He will discuss use of resistant stock and other new research developments that show promise to reduce the impacts of Varroa on honey bees.
