Zoom presentation: Click to join meetingOur speaker will be Dr. Geoff Williams, Associate Professor in the Entomology department at Auburn University. The topic will be Tropilaelaps mites: a looming threat on the horizon?
Akin to Varroa destructor, Tropilaelaps mercedesae is parasitic mite of honey bees in Asia. Recent detections of tropilaelaps in eastern Europe has shone a very big spotlight this mite. But, should beekeepers in western Europe and the Americas fear it?

ACBA Zoom Presentation: Dr. Dewey Caron
Zoom presentation: Click to join meetingVarroa mites are one of the 3 major challenges to successfully keeping honey bees. Keeping ahead of their population increase with stock and early season (April/May) control of reproduction phase plus late season control of dispersal phase mites on adult honey bees to allow colonies to produce enough winter bees requires a season-long plan.

July In-Person ACBA Meeting: Michael Thiele
San Leandro Senior Community Center 13909 E 14th Street, San Leandro, CA, United StatesJoin us for a presentation by Michael Joshin Thiele, Executive Director of Apis Arborea. He'll be speaking on Resilience from the Wild: Rethinking Beekeeping Through Nature-Inspired Models.
This will be a compelling presentation on the future of honeybee health in the face of crisis. As of early 2025, U.S. commercial beekeepers have reported catastrophic losses, with survival rates plummeting to just 20%. In stark contrast, wild honeybee populations are thriving—with survival rates nearing 80%. Apis Arborea will share groundbreaking research from the Galbreath Wildlands Preserve and introduce LocApiary, a regenerative, place-based model that biomimics wild conditions to support resilient local bee populations. Discover how this approach offers hope for backyard beekeepers and the wider pollinator community through ecological integration and community collaboration.
