February In-Person Meeting: Jennifer Radtke, Swarm Prevention in Early Spring

Our speaker will be BioFuel Oasis co-founder Jennifer Radtke on the topic of Swarm Prevention in Early Spring. Jennifer has over 19 years of beekeeping experience. She’s been teaching beekeeping classes for 13 years, and has published several articles in the American Bee Journal. She’s also a former Vice President of the ACBA and the author of a book on Bay Area beekeeping. Swarm pressure is very high for overwintered hives in the Bay Area.  The back & forth weather of February/March make it difficult to inspect the hive regularly.  Jennifer has only had a hive swarm once in the last 10 years & she's excited to share her strategies for preventing swarms (& keeping the neighbors happy)!  Everyone is welcome at the meeting, including beginners. It's a great way to meet people who can help you on your beekeeping journey. We hope to see you there!

Zoom Presentation: Susan Kegley

Susan Kegley is one of the owners of Bees N Blooms farm. She’ll give a Zoom presentation on Beekeeping in the 2020s: Challenges and Solutions. Susan’s background as a PhD chemist and founder of the Pesticide Research Institute has inspired and informed the creation of the farm. She and her staff are demonstrating healthier, organic agricultural practices that sustain animals, plants, and people alike.

We'll go over what to look for as part of an inspection, and what to do next. If you're new to beekeeping, you'll have a chance to get hands-on experience with bees.

Third-Time Guest Speaker Wally Shaw will speak to the club in a Zoom presentation titled Both Sides Now: Proactive, and Reactive Swarm Prevention Everyone Should Know. You'll hear observations on swarm-trigger criteria,  time tested approaches to swarm prevention, and recipes for success. The swarm-organizer bees in the hive want to facilitate reproduction; the beekeeper's agenda is to prevent swarming out into the neighborhood.

This event is focused on information for beginners. Rob Mathews will go over what to look for in a hive inspection, and how to do a sugar roll test for varroa mites. You'll have a chance to get hands-on experience with bees.
