After completing a BA in Cell Biology and Molecular Genetics at the University of Maryland in 2014, Anthony first joined the vanEngelsdorp Bee Lab as a lab and field technician for Bee Informed Partnership. Over the next two years, he discovered a love for bees and beekeeping and decided to pursue a PhD. Anthony’s primary research focus is honey bee pathophysiology and its relationship to colony loss. He is currently developing statistical models that predict colony mortality using pathology and other measures of bee health.
Dr. Bartlett will speak on the topic of genetic diversity.
“My work integrates across ecological and evolutionary biology using techniques spanning mathematical models to field studies. My current focus explores how changes in host ecology affect the ecology of their infectious diseases, and consequences for both pathogen and host evolution. I apply this to managed apiculture in an effort to assist beekeepers in maintaining viable honeybee populations, and includes nutrition, ecotoxicology, and wider integration with agroecology from the perspective of a pests & pathogens biologist.”

Club member Greg Mau is hosting a free event this Saturday to learn how to grow your own queen cells.
“If you are want/need to learn how to handle and/or utilize queen cells to make queens, I will host a get together this Sat at my place in Fremont. The goal would be for you to learn what it takes to put a Mating NUC together on Sat, to put one (or more) together yourself at home Sun, and to pickup your cell(s) and seed your NUC(s) on Mon. If successful, you will have a mated queen (or queens) by the end of May. Please call or text if you want to reserve a space on Sat... and remember to bring a bee suit as we'll also be going through a few previously seeded NUCs to check for queen and/or queen signs.”

Michael Joshin Thiele, Founder and President of Apis Arborea, has appeared in national and international magazines, books and films. He has presented his work at Harvard University & New York University, consulted for the USDA, and in 2006 developed the organization Gaia Bees to advance biodynamic practices in apiculture.
Thiele founded Apis Arborea in 2017 to preserve the life and resiliency of honeybees through wilding. He pioneered work in self-willed ecological processes, and the use of a holistic, system- and science-based framework in working with bees. He offers workshops and training in the U.S. and internationally.
Contemporary research documents the resilience and longevity of wild honeybees in remote landscapes that are sheltered from agricultural and apicultural practices. How can we integrate the qualities and conditions that allow honeybees in the wild to thrive into our backyards apiaries? Apis Arborea’s approach incorporates the biomimicry of arboreal nest conditions, and promotion of natural population dynamics.
Amy represents Dalan, who recently announced the Vaccine for American Foul Brood. She is a field technician and leads beekeeper relations at Dalan. Previously, Amy spent 7 years with the USDA studying honeybee nutrition, microbiome, pathogens and toxin exposure. She holds a BS in Wildlife Conservation and Management and a MS in Entomology, both from the University of Arizona. Amy enjoys traveling the US in her self-converted camper van with her dog Miles and tending to her personal honeybee hives.
In this presentation, she will discuss how the world’s first vaccine for bees works, how to administer it and what conditional licensing means.
